Samsung today announced its upgraded versions of the Samsung PRO Plus and Samsung EVO Plus SD cards and their microSD versions.
The new cards are essentially the upgrades to the older versions released October 2020, which I took out for a spin and was impressed with their performances.
Samsung PRO and EVO SD of 2021: Faster performance
The new card released today promises to be even faster.
Indeed, Samsung says the PRO Plus version now has the rated speeds of up to 160MB/s for reading and up to 120MB/s for writing. That's close to double the speed of the previous generation in some cases.
The new Samsung PRO Plus is available in capacities from 32GB all the way to 512GB.
On the EVO Plus front, Samsung says it also offers up to 1.3 times the speed of the older models at up to 130MB/s. The card is available with capacities ranging from 32GB to 256GB.
In any case, at these speeds, the two cards are fast enough for professional seamless 4K capturing. Clearly, they are also suitable for casual day-to-day usage.
The micro SD versions of both cards have the same specifications but in slightly different capacities. Specifically, the PRO version comes with 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB variants, while the EVO ranges from 64GB to 512GB.
No matter which forms factors, both the Samsung PRO Plus and EVO Plus are tough. They can handle shocks, water submersion, drops, X-Ray, and magnetism. All of them come with a 10-year warranty.
Note, though, that, like most microSD and SD cards on the market, the lower-capacities versions of the Samsung generally do not have all the features of the top-tier cards and tend to be slower.
Availability and pricing
Samsung says the EVO Plus SD card is available today in capacities from 32GB to 256GB for the prices that range from $8.99 to $39.99.
The PRO Plus SD Card will be available later this year in capacities from 32GB to 512GB, with the pricing being announced then. Some versions of the card will come included with a USB 3.0 Samsung Memory Card Reader.
On the microSD front, both the PRO Plus and EVO Plus are also available today. The EVO Plus comes in capacities from 64GB to 512GB for $18.99 to $99.99. The PRO Plus's 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB capacities cost $34.99, 54.99, and $109.99 respectively.
You can also get the PRO Plus version with a USB 3.0 Samsung Memory Card Reader for another $5.
