Hardcore gamers looking for more options to pimp their rigs will soon have a couple of more options in terms of digital storage.
Western Digital today announced, at its What’s Next event, two new drives to its grown WD Black gaming portfolio, the WD BLACK SN850X NVMe internal SSD and the WD BLACK P40 Game Drive SSD.
Though details are still sketchy, both drives are not entirely new but rather updates to the company’s existing options.
Two news WD Black options
The SN850X seems to be a variant of the SN850 that came out in late 2020. It’s a PCIe Gen 4 NVMe SSD with a top speed, according to Western Digital, of up to 7300MB/s.
The new internal drive includes Game Mode 2.0 (Windows only), which is supposedly a performance-boosting feature.
The original Game Mode found in the SN850 proved to be more of a gimmick than a real feature—it simply disabled the drive’s power-saving mode. It’ll be interesting to find out what version 2.0 will do.
On the other hand, the WD BLACK P40 Game Drive SSD is a variant of the P50 with similar specs. It’s a rugged USB 3.2 Gen2x2 (20Gbps) portable SSD with 2,000 MB/s of copy speed.
Its only novelty is the new customizable RGB lighting that can be programmed via the WD BLACK Dashboard software (Windows only).
Pricing and availability
Western Digital says the WD BLACK SN850X NVMe SSD will be available in July 2022 in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities in both “naked” and heatsink versions. Its cost starts at $189.99.
On the other hand, the WD BLACK P40 Game Drive SSD is slated to be available sometime in Summer. It’ll come in 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB and starts at $119.99.
