Western Digital today announced at its What’s Next event, a new SanDisk Extreme PRO UHS-I SD card lineup which is claimed to deliver up to 200MB/s in reading.
On the recording end, the new cards can handle up to 140MB/s of write speed, making them ideal for content creators who want to shoot in 4K
SanDisk Extreme PRO SD storage: “Record-breaking” speeds
The storage maker says the new card line achieves these “record-breaking” speeds by leveraging its proprietary SanDisk QuickFlow technology.
These cards come in both SD and microSD designs. The latter includes an SD adapter.
It’s worth noting, though, that the new performance speeds are only available in the top-tier cards with capacities ranging from 256GB to 1TB. Lower-capacities cards are also fast but have slower performance as you’ll note in the hardware specification of the microSD version below.

What’s more, a (micro)SD card’s read speed depends on the reader, too, and the most existing readers cap at lower than 200MB/s. For this reason, Western Digital also announced today the SanDisk Professional PRO-READER for SD & microSD cards that fully support the new lineup’s speeds.
The new reader features USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps) via USB-C and comes with an SD card slot and a microSD card slot. It’s relatively compact, measuring 4.54 x 2.36 x 0.75 in (115.3 x 60 x 19.05 mm) at 0.26 lbs (0.12 kg).
Availability and pricing
Western Digital says you can buy the new SanDisk Extreme PRO UHS-I microSD cards next month with prices starting at $19.99 (64GB) up to $329.99 (1TB). The SD version is slightly more affordable ranging from $18.79 (64GB) to $279.99 (1TB)
The PRO-READER is also available in June for $59.99.
Except because SanDisk/WD can NEVER resist the chance for an easily avoidable self-own, there’s literally ZERO legitimate reasons to get the next-gen “Extreme Pro” over the next-gen vanilla “Extreme”!…
It’s a mere +5% more sequential performance (200 & 140MB/s vs 190 & 130MB/s) for a whopping +33% higher price!!! ($330 vs $250 1TB MSRP)
That’s absolutely freaking idiotic!!!
