Routers
A router is the heart of a local network. Each network needs one router, and preferably no more than one.
Technically, a router is a layer 3 network switch, which, at a minimum, includes a WAN port to connect to an Internet source and one (or a few) LAN ports for connecting local wired devices.
Nowadays, the term “router” is often used to refer to a “Wi-Fi router” — one that has a built-in Wi-Fi access point. Consequently, we use “non-Wi-Fi” to refer to a standard router that omits built-in Wi-Fi capability.
ASUS GS-AX3000 Review (vs. RT-AX3000): A Solid Gaming Router
In many ways, ASUS’s new ROG STRIX GS-AX3000 router replaces the RT-AX3000 (a.k.a RT-AX58U). Despite sharing these same hardware specs, the new router has some major improvements, including special online gaming features and a more responsive web interface. For the most part, its performance was better, too, in my testing, …
TP-Link Archer AX73 Review (vs. Archer AX50): A Medium Home’s Wi-Fi 6 Choice
TP-Link seems to try to fill in all the slots of Wi-Fi 6, case in point, the TP-Link Archer AX73. This dual-band AX5400 router is an incremental improvement from the Archer AX50 (AX3000) while a tad below the Archer AX6000. And it proved to be just that in my testing. …
QNAP QHora-301W Review: Ultra-Reliable but (Still) Sorely Lacking
The QHora-301W Dual 10G wifi 6 AX3600 SD-WAN router—the very first Wi-Fi broadcaster from QNAP, a known NAS server maker—is intriguing. As the name suggests, there are things about it you might have never heard of before. OK, this is the first consumer-grade Wi-Fi 6 broadcaster that comes with two …
ASUS GT-AXE11000 vs. NETGEAR RAXE500: Patience is a Virtue
This ASUS GT-AXE11000 vs. NETGEAR RAXE500 matchup is very similar to the one of the ASUS GT-AX1100 vs. NETGEAR RAX200 with a twist: Currently, I do not recommend that you rush out to buy either of the former. There’s nothing wrong with the routers themselves—they are both great in their …
NETGEAR RAXE500 Review: An Formidable 6E Router for a Price
As the second Wi-Fi 6E broadcaster on the market, the much anticipated NETGEAR RAXE500 Nighthawk 12-Stream AXE11000 Tri-Band Wi-Fi 6E Router is the presumed rival of the ASUS GT-AXE11000 that arrived earlier this year. Apart from the additional 6GHz band, the two have many other things in common. That includes …
ASUS GT-AXE11000 ROG Rapture Wi-Fi 6E Router Review: A Massive Luxury
The ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AXE11000 Wi-Fi 6E Gaming Router, originally announced in September 2020, didn’t materialize until early 2021. And it still made it to be the very first Wi-Fi 6E broadcaster in the world. Months later, there are still just a few 6GHz clients, namely, the Samsung S21 Ultra …
Linksys MR7500 Hydra Pro 6E Review: Too Big a Bet on 6GHz
The Linksys MR7500 AXE6600 Hydra Pro 6E Tri-Band Mesh Wi-Fi Router—available for purchase today, together with the Atlas Pro 6E mesh system—has a cool name. And that’s about its only novelty. Sure, it’s the third Wi-Fi 6E broadcaster on the market, joining the ranks of the ASUS GT-AXE11000 and the …
