Today at CES 2025, Micron announced the Crucial P510 SSD, the latest in its mainstream P series PCIe NVMe family, which also includes the P310, P5 Plus, and others.

Crucial P510: First P series drive with PCIe Gen 5

The new Crucial P510 is Micron’s third PCIe Gen 5 SSD after the performance-tier T700 and T705. It is also the company’s first mainstream NVMe SSD.

Micron says the new drive offers ” read/write speeds of up to 11,000/9,500 megabytes (MB) per second,” which are slightly lower than those in the T series. However, in real-world performance, there is likely no difference between these drives simply because PCIe Gen 5’s performance is beyond what general users can easily notice in daily tasks.

PCIe Gen 5 SSDs have been known to have heat issues, as with the T700 and T705. Micron says that the new P510 “consumes 25% less power than previous Crucial Gen5 SSDs,” specifically the T705, which already has better energy consumption than the T700. Hopefully, that means it’ll also produce that much less heat.

Still, the new drive comes with an integrated heatsink, though there’s a “naked” version designed for laptops. The drive itself is single-sided and very thin. In terms of storage space, the P510 offers 1TB and 2TB options, though larger capacities are possible later.

Micron, so far, has been the leader in PCIe Gen 5 adoption, and this third SSD solidifies this position. Samsung, for example, has been releasing hybrid PCIe Gen 5/Gen 4 drives, such as the 990 Evo Plus and 990 Evo, to avoid heat issues.

Crucial P310 gets a heatsink version

In a way, the new P510 is a PCIe Gen 5 version of the previous PCIe Gen 4 Crucial P310. Speaking of which, Micron also announced today the heatsink version of the older SSD, the 2280 version.

The company says this version “is designed to fit into and work with PlayStation 5, but can also be used with desktops, providing desktop gamers and creators unthrottled performance.”

In my testing, the P310 is one of the fastest PCIe Gen 4 NVMe SSDs on the market, and the new heatsink version means you can use the drive to the maximum without worrying about potential heat issues.

The Crucial P310 is available in 2230 and 2280 designs. The latter now gets a new version with an integrated heatsink.

An expanded RAM portfolio

In addition to the new SSDs, Crucial also showcased its expanded memory portfolio with the following updates:

  • Crucial DDR5 Pro Overclocking (OC) Gaming Memory: Crucial is now offering a new 32GB density option for its Crucial DDR5 Pro OC Gaming Memory. With the new 32GB option, Micron offers gamers and hardware tinkers more options to upgrade or build their souped-up rigs.
  • Crucial DDR5 Pro Plug-and-Play Memory: These are non-OC memory sticks for those wanting performance without the need to configure overclocking. They are now available in 64GB capacity with a speed of 5,600 MT/s.
  • Crucial DDR5 CUDIMM/CSODIMM: Building on the 16 GB DDR5 clocked unbuffered dual inline memory modules (CUDIMM) and clocked small outline dual memory modules (CSODIMM). They are now available in 32 and 64GB capacities, and CSODIMM solutions in 24 and 32GB capacities at 6400 MT/s.
  • Crucial DDR5 UDIMM/SODIMM: Crucial is now offering its Crucial Classic DDR5 Memory in a 64GB capacity at the 5600 MT/s speed grade across both UDIMM and SODIMM form factors.
  • MRDIMM: Crucial also announced that it’s now shipping multiplexed rank dual inline memory modules (MRDIMMs) in distribution through the channel to consumers.

Availability and pricing

Micron says the new Crucial P510 SSD will be available worldwide starting in the spring of this year. The new P310 with a heatsink will be available later this month. Finally, the new Crucial memory will be available in February. All of these products will have their pricing announced at the time of availability.

The new Crucial P310 will perform the same as the existing non-heatsink version. Check back to see how the new and exciting P510 performs in real-world usage.
